“To build up a shattered country one needs to heal souls and souls dwell in hearts“

Afghanistan
Afghanistan has been war- terror- and violence-stricken for 30 years and belongs to the five poorest countries in the world. Today, despite 10 year efforts of international communities to secure peace, democracy and reconstruction, the country at the Hindukusch is in a very critical state. Stability and peace seem to be out of reach. A sustainable improvement of living conditions for the population is still to achieve. Reconstruction of essential infrastructure is progressing only very slowly, this unfortunately also includes the Afghan health system. There is a resource shortage in all sectors; several qualified and skilled workers have left the country. During the Taliban regime education programs for women were not allowed, resulting in a major lack of female medical staff right now that still creates problems in operating hospitals properly.
25 % of all living born children do not reach the age of five and every 30 minutes one woman dies during delivery. According to UN-estimations up to ten million mines and duds are positioned in the country. Up until today, hundreds of thousands, especially women and children, have been mutilated and crippled by mines. Severe burns, drops from the roof, infected fractures and bullet wounds belong to the everyday life of children. They grow up in an environment of poverty, deprivation and violence which is hard to grasp in Germany. Countless children die every day due to inadequate medical treatment.
The people of this country do not need our pity but they deserve our active solidarity!
